Imagine the forest primeval. Imagine numerous species of primate, even the anthropoids (chimpanzees, gorillas, and the first humans) gathering fruits and leaves rich in protein beneath the roof of the forest. This story begins more than 55 million years ago, but is revisited in the continuing investigation by Dr. Katherine Milton, anthropology professor at the University of California. Her research on the link between diet and evolution is done in collaboration with David Popovich, a doctoral student in nutrition sciences at the University of Toronto, who also saw the connection between diet and the development in humans of visual acuity, depth perception, memory, speech, dexterity, and social behavior.

To receive a SmartWood certification, a forest management operation must submit to a field evaluation. This public summary is a synthesis of the initial evaluation report which was developed based upon information obtained during the field evaluation. As part of the certification process, annual auditing is conducted with the objective of monitoring forest management activities, reviewing the progress of the operation toward the fulfillment of its terms of certification, and verifying that it continues to operate under the standards of SmartWood. The updated information obtained during these annual audits is included as appendices to the public summary.
